Stay The Night: The Blackaddie Hotel, Sanquhar

Andy Lynes finds that the six-hour trek to Ian McAndrew's new venture in Dumfries and Galloway is well worth the effort.

Set in two acres of gardens, surrounded by fields and overlooking the river Nith (a prime spot for salmon fishing), Blackaddie House Hotel is where chef Ian McAndrew chose to make his comeback after nearly a decade away from the stoves. Never a household name, McAndrew (who trained with the legendary Anton Mosimann at the Dorchester hotel) is nevertheless held in the highest regard by chefs and switched-on foodies.

No stranger to Michelin stars, easily bored chef Ian McAndrew stays sharp by changing the menu in his Scottish hotel daily...........

McAndrew leads a brigade of three and, impressively, cooks at every service, including breakfast. The restaurant menu offers four choices at each stage and changes
on a daily basis, partly to take advantage of the fresh Scottish produce but also because the chef admits to being easily bored. “I get very fed-up with the dishes
very quickly, and they very rarely come back the same,” he says.

“Wonderful food break 5 of 5 stars Reviewed 18 February 2011

We came for the food and were not disappointed, we have eaten in some of the top 100 and Michelin Star restaurants and can say with confidence the food here rates alongside them. We found it very refreshing that Ian found time to sit and discuss his food with us not only to explain but also to seek our opinion...

Blackaddie’s public rooms are comfortable, with an open fire in the bar and a small, cosy library stocked with books. The hotel is family-run and our hosts were very much in evidence, speaking with guests and making us (and our dogs) feel welcome.

The real bonus was the absolutely spectacular dinner whose highlights included a melt-in-the-mouth rabbit roulade and a 28-day aged fillet. Disappointment with our
lack of catch paled into insignificance in the face of such culinary expertise and we vowed we would come back, not necessarily to fish, just to eat!

“A HIDDEN gem”, “a secret treasure”, “a fantastic find” – were just some of the online reviews I had a look at before heading off to eat at Sanquhar’s Blackaddie House Hotel.

Well, let me tell you, the secret’s out! If you’ve ever watched the finals of Masterchef and wondered if the stunningly beautiful plates of food served up actually taste as amazing as they look, then a visit to the Blackaddie is in order.

It’s rare that a plate of food actually makes you smile, but the scallops were exceptional, and a glance over the table confirmed that the quail was equally impressive.

Blackaddie goes forth When I asked Blackaddie house owner and head chef Ian McAndrew to encapsulate his philosophy on food it took him no time at all. 'I want colour and I want flavour and I'm big on both' he said......'there's no subtlety with me, if I use a flavour then you'll know it's there. And portions size is important: mine are big'.......... see the complete article from the February 2011 edition of Scottish Field here.

Blackaddie adds to its awards- AWARD-WINNING Blackaddie Country House Hotel, at Sanquhar, Dumfriesshire, run by Michelin chef Ian McAndrew, has been awarded two rosettes by the AA. Rosettes are awarded by the AA to restaurants for the quality of their food. Two rosettes are awarded to the best local restaurants which offer higher standards and better consistency. Greater precision must be apparent in the cooking, as well as obvious attention to the quality and selection of ingredients. Food is at the heart of Blackaddie, with some of the best to be found in Scotland, and with a number of prestigious awards already won within its first year. It features, where possible, locally sourced Scottish ingredients on its daily changing menu, and only the very best will do. Chef and owner Ian McAndrew has held a Michelin star and a number of other accolades for many years in his previous restaurants and was, at the time, the youngest Englishman to attain a coveted Michelin star. Ian is now to be found in the kitchens of Blackaddie House Hotel working with his team of chefs to bring his own distinctive style of food to south-west Scotland. Blackaddie is set in its own gardens on the banks of the River Nith, one of Scotland’s great, yet little known, salmon rivers, with extensive views across Scotland’s Southern Upland Way.

Historic and Romantic Country House Hotel in Scotland The Blackaddie is also a historic place, dating back to the early 16th century when it was built as the rectory to St Bride's Church. It has been extended over the years and, like all good historic hotels, boasts its own ghost. There are also 2 acres of gardens, and the conservatory and some of the guest bedrooms overlook the River Nith, a popular spot for fishing and walking. But Blackaddie's crowning glory is its food.
Best Restaurants in Dumfries and Galloway A sign that this is one of the best restaurants in Dumfries and Galloway is that the chef and recent new owner of the Blackaddie, Ian McAndrew, was immediately awarded two AA rosettes, and will surely soon achieve his ambition of the ultimate accolade of three. Ian was the youngest English chef ever to win a Michelin star, which he held for several years, along with winning countless other food awards. He has written three cookery books and, since arriving at the Blackaddie with his wife Jane two years ago, has already received a Gold Plate from Hotel Review Scotland, the Five Star Excellence rating from Food Review Scotland, and a Silver Award from Eat Scotland – though the Gold Award must soon be on the way.
guardian review Blackaddie Country House Hotel, Scotland Ian and Jane McAndrew run Blackaddie; the river Nith can be seen from their conservatory and some of their nine bedrooms with en suite bathrooms overlook their garden or the river. The full Scottish breakfast includes kippers and porridge and Ian is a Michelin-starred chef who plans to hold cookery courses at the B&B from September. These will take the form of residential weekend packages, including a visit to a local whiskey distillery.

Dinner with... Ian McAndrew   - IAN McANDREW is the chef and owner of the award-winning Blackaddie Country House Hotel, on the banks of the River Nith, in Sanquhar, near Dumfries. He has held a Michelin star for many years and has worked at hotels including the Dorchester. Big-name chefs who have worked under him and gone on to greatness include Andrew Fairley, Tony Borthwick and Paul Kitching
good food guide Reports have come in thick and fast for this classy restaurant in an “out-of-the-way area of Scotland”. Ian McAndrew is no stranger to the guide, though he has been absent from its pages for some time. Here he is cooking an a homely country house that dates from the sixteenth century. Local produce is everything and the result is “absolutely first-class food”. Scallops Waldorf with Chardonnay-soaked raisins and walnut foam has been praised in more than one report, crisp belly pork with a chorizo sauce has been described as “delectable”, while a test meal produced outstanding herb wrapped cannon of lamb with English Asparagus and herb and caper dressing and a textbook Bakewell tart. Praise too for “a phenomenal rhubarb dish with ginger cream and candied slivers of rhubarb”

Staying at home has proved to be the smart option, what with the snow and strikes Scotland has become a leading destination for foodies. Blackaddie House Hotel, tucked away in beautiful Dumfriesshire illustrates the benefits of staying in your own back yard. My partner, Steven and I enjoy nothing more than sitting down to a delicious meal, at Blackaddie we felt we’d arrived at the mother-ship. Ian and his wife Jane really know their stuff. I was struck most of all by how deliciously fresh everything tasted. We had a brilliant break and a first class trip to a No.1 food destination
